I love to travel and every January, I choose two destinations - one in the U.S. and one abroad - where I'd like to visit. In the last few years, I've been to Paris, Mumbai, Cartegena, Colombia, Asheville, North Carolina and Savannah, Georgia. As is probably obvious, I prefer bustling cities and quaint towns - rife with museums, restaurants, bars and most importantly, antique stores (there is so much joy in thrifting!) - over beaches or cruises. So my second wish for 2012 is to travel, and this year, I would love to go to New Orleans, Louisiana and Marrakesh, Morocco.
New Orleans
I've heard so many wonderful things about New Orleans from friends who went to Tulane that I don't think there is any way that this city can fail to meet expectations. I'm especially looking forward to all of the following: (1) gaining 5 lbs, 99% of them from beignets; (2) eating at Cafe du Monde in the French quarter and trying not to look like a tourist; (3) oohing and aahing at the houses in the Garden District, which may or may not include peeking into windows; and (4) searching for treasures, aka more furniture, for my 400 square foot apartment.
Marrakesh
A few years ago I read {The Beautiful Fall} by Alicia Drake. It chronicles the rise and fall of the fashion industry in Paris during the 1970's and focuses on the competition between two designers in particular, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld. (Side note - for those of you interested in fashion history, I highly recommend this book!) Well, it seems that Mr. Saint Laurent was capitavated by Marrakesh and after reading this book, I am too! Ideally, I'd like to go to Marrakesh with two empty suitcases and load them up with textiles, spices, almond cookies, mint tea, lighting fixtures, Berber rugs, windows, antique doors, etc. Okay, so when I said suitcases, I really meant container ships. Oh, and if you need me while I'm gone, I'll be staying {here} at this charming bed and breakfast run by an adorable Chicago family.

Have any of you been to either of these cities? Have any recommendations? And what far-away places are on your travel wish list?
